Charles Kittel passed away yesterday evening, at the age of 102. Charles served on the Berkeley physics faculty from 1951 to 1978, and since 1978 has been an emeritus faculty member. His famous textbook "Introduction to Solid State Physics" remains a classic. For many, this text defined the field of solid state physics, later called condensed matter physics. His contributions to teaching includes other important textbooks, and his mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, including a Nobel Laureate, produced world renown scientists who greatly influenced the development of this field world wide. Kittel is often credited with bringing the field of solid state physics to Berkeley. His research on semiconductors and magnetism and his teaching achievements were recognized by awards and honors including the Oliver E.Buckley Prize of the American Physical Society (1957), the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers (1979), and the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award (1970). He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
